Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt survived stints in Iraq and Afghanistan, where she helped guard military bases at the peak of America’s wars in those regions in the mid-to-late 2000s. Instead, she lost her life fighting her own government in the corridors of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 — gunned down by a Capitol Police officer at the front of a crowd trying to smash toward the nearby House chamber and prevent the counting of 2020 Electoral College votes that would make Joe Biden president. Seconds before the fatal shot, a video captured her compatriots smashing a window and shouting, “We don’t want to hurt no one, we just want to go inside.” Babbitt’s death came at the end of what her friends and family described as a descent into a rabbit hole of right-wing extremism and conspiracy theories that began not long after her 14 years of military service ended, while she struggled to make it as the small-business owner of a pool cleaning service, which a sign proclaimed as “a mask-free zone” in the time of coronavirus. On the last full day of her life, Babbitt wrote on Twitter in the apocalyptic language of the QAnon conspiracy theory that believes a “Deep State” sex-trafficking cabal has corrupted America, proclaiming: “Nothing will stop us. They can try and try and try but the storm is here and it is descending upon DC in less than 24 hours … dark to light!” (…) Babbitt was far from the only disillusioned U.S. military vet drawn to the insurrection at the Capitol. She was joined by the likes of a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, Larry Randall Brock Jr., who’d served as a flight commander in Afghanistan and now was captured on video on the floor of the U.S. Senate in a combat helmet and full tactical gear, carrying zip-tie handcuffs. Like Babbitt, friends said they watched Brock become increasingly radicalized in his support of Donald Trump and his political movement. Family members told the New Yorker’s Ronan Farrow that the Air Force remained central to Brock’s identity and, as one said, “He used to tell me that I only saw the world in shades of gray, and that the world was black and white.”

In den USA gilt Mercola als skrupelloser Geschäftemacher, der bereits mehrfach wegen irreführender Behauptungen mit hohen Geldstrafen belegt wurde. Die Falschinformationen des „Alternativmediziners“ erreichen über ein russisches Fake-News-Portal auch deutsche Impfgegner – und tragen zur Radikalisierung der Szene bei. „Riesenskandal aufgedeckt: Covid-19-Impfung zerstört unser Immunsystem nachhaltig“ lautet die reißerische Überschrift eines „medizinischen Fachartikels“, der erstmals im November vergangenen Jahres in deutscher Sprache auf der in Russland gehosteten Website „Anonymousnews“ erschien. Von dort aus verbreitete sich der Text rasant in den deutschsprachigen Ländern, wurde von Querdenkern vielfach bei Facebook, Twitter, Telegram, oder in E-Mails geteilt und erschien zudem im Querdenker-Portal „2020news“. (…) In den USA ist der 66-jährige Mercola kein Unbekannter. Seit Jahrzehnten agiert der publicityerfahrene Osteopath als einer der schärfsten Kritiker des anerkannten Gesundheitssystems. Laut „Washington Post“ unterstützt der vermögende Unternehmer zudem die Anti-Impf-Bewegung in den USA mit Millionenbeträgen. Doch viele der von ihm selbst empfohlenen „Heilmethoden“ sind mehr als fragwürdig: So bot er etwa über seine Website Wärmebildkameras zum Kauf an, wie sie in der Gebäudetechnik zum Einsatz kommen. Damit sei die Früherkennung von Brustkrebs „präziser möglich als durch eine herkömmliche Mammographie“, behauptete Mercola. Die angesehene American Cancer Society widersprach Mercola in aller Deutlichkeit: Die Wirksamkeit eines Thermografie-Screenings zur Früherkennung von Brustkrebs sei durch keine einzige Studie bewiesen. Die US-Behörde für Lebens- und Arzneimittel (FDA) stoppte schließlich den Verkauf der Geräte, da die Gefahr bestand, dass krebsgefährdete Frauen sich in falscher Sicherheit wiegen (…) Mehrfach offerierte der geschäftstüchtige Arzt im Internet von ihm selbst angemischte Mixturen, die wahre Wunder versprachen: ein Leben ohne Krebs, Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen, Diabetes oder Infektionskrankheiten wie Covid-19. Dutzende Male mussten die Behörden aufgrund falscher Werbeversprechen einschreiten. Doch davon ließ sich der einfallsreiche Doktor nicht aufhalten. Bereits 2017 gab er sein Vermögen in einer eidesstattlichen Erklärung mit rund 100 Millionen US-Dollar an – genug, um die von den zuständigen Behörden verhängten Geldstrafen aus der Portokasse zu begleichen (…) it einem Geflecht aus digitalen Ratgebertexten, Produktionsstätten und Handelsfirmen, die er von seiner Luxusvilla in Cape Coral im US-Bundesstaat Florida – nicht weit vom Anwesen Donald Trumps – steuert, gehört Mercola zweifellos zu den erfolgreichsten Vermarktern sogenannter „alternativer“ Heil- und Lifestyleprodukte weltweit. Auch die Corona-Pandemie beschert dem Naturheiltycoon große Aufmerksamkeit und kurbelt das lukrative Geschäft mit zahlreichen fragwürdigen Gesundheitstipps und Mittelchen weiter an: So empfiehlt Mercola auf seiner Webseite etwa die Selbstbehandlung mit der aggressiven Bleiche Wasserstoffperoxid, die eigentlich zur Desinfektion von Oberflächen gedacht ist. Dabei beruft sich der Alternativheiler auf angeblich „gute Erfahrungen“, die deutsche Ärzte während des Naziregimes beim Einträufeln des ätzenden Stoffs in den Gehörgang von Grippekranken gemacht hätten.

The Justice Department revealed new charges against a Texas man who allegedly participated in the Capitol attack and posted online death threats against Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and a US Capitol Police officer. Garret Miller of Texas faces five criminal charges stemming from the Capitol insurrection, including trespassing offenses and making death threats. Miller allegedly tweeted, “assassinate AOC,” according to court documents. He also said the police officer who fatally shot a Trump supporter during the attack “deserves to die” and won’t “survive long” because it’s “huntin[g] season.” Prosecutors said in newly released court documents that Miller posted extensively on social media before and during the attack, saying a “civil war could start” and “next time we bring the guns.” He was arrested on Wednesday, according to the Justice Department. Federal prosecutors are asking a judge to keep him in jail pending trial, and a detention hearing is scheduled for Monday.

Angriffe auf Moscheen und Muslime — im Durchschnitt werden in Deutschland jeden Tag mehr als zwei Straftaten aus islamfeindlichen Motiven begangen. Und das sind nur die offiziellen Zahlen: Die alltäglichen Beleidigungen und Diskriminierungen, die Muslime und vor allem Kopftuchträger:innen erleiden müssen, werden in der Regel nicht zu Anzeige gebracht, aus Scham, aus Angst vor der Polizei, weil den Opfern nicht geglaubt wird oder, weil sie ihre Geschichte nicht beweisen können. Trotzdem hat der Bundestag am Donnerstag, dem 14. Januar, mit den Stimmen von SPD, FDP, CDU/CSU und AfD einen Antrag der Linkspartei abgelehnt, der ein verstärktes Vorgehen gegen Islamfeindlichkeit einforderte. Während sich die Grünen enthielten, erklärte Christoph de Vries von der CDU, der von den Linken gewählte Begriff des antimuslimischen Rassismus sei ein „konstruierter Rassismusbegriff“, „quasi Rassismus ohne Rassen“, der auch vom türkischen Staats- und Regierungschef Erdoğan genutzt werde. Trotz all solcher Ausreden sind sich seriöse Wissenschaftler:innen, Aktivist:innen und Betroffene einig: Islamfeindlichkeit ist ein reales Problem. Die Tatsache klar zu stellen, dass es sich dabei auch um Rassismus handelt, war eine der offensichtlichen Herzensangelegenheiten von Maryam al-Windi, der Referentin, die am 13. Januar den Workshop zum Thema antimuslimischer Rassismus leitete. Die junge Frau ist Gründungsmitlgied von EmBIPoC – Empowerment von Black, Indigenous und People of Color, einer Hochschulgruppe an der Universität Kiel, und wurde vom Allgemeinen Studierendenausschuss (AStA) und der Initiative RUB bekennt Farbe eingeladen. Per Zoom führte al-Windi die zahlreichen Teilnehmer:innen in aller Kürze in die Grundlagen der Rassismus-Theorie ein, erläuterte, was es mit „dem Rassismus ohne Rassen“ nach dem Soziologen Stewart Hall (auch als Kulturrassismus bekannt) zu tun hat und wie dieser gesellschaftlich wirkt. Danach ging es in Break-out Sitzungen, in denen die Teilnehmenden über einen realen Fall diskutieren sollten, bei dem eine Bewerberin mit Kopftuch wegen ihr zugeschriebener Werte und Verhaltensweisen abgelehnt und zugleich explizit als nicht in eine „weltoffene und liberale“ Gesellschaft passend eingeordnet wurde.
Federal authorities on Friday charged a prominent right-wing activist from South Jersey and a Monmouth County correctional officer in connection with the Jan. 6 Capitol mob riot in Washington. Stephanie Hazelton, of Medford, who also identifies herself as Ayla Wolf, was seen on video directing members of a crowd of people barreling into police officers and pushing through the building’s West Terrace entrance in an effort to breach the Capitol. She repeatedly said to others that “we need more men” and “we gotta keep going. ” The video, uploaded to YouTube by a self-described conservative channel, Action 8 News, doesn’t show if Hazelton participated in violence that occurred at the same entrance. Another video from the scene shows a group of rioters beat police officers with batons and shields. She hasn’t responded to calls, messages, and a letter left at her home seeking comment. (…) Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Bender said during an initial court appearance via Zoom on Friday that Hazelton was seen on video “trying to incite or recruit people to participate in the attack.” She faces several counts, including a felony charge of obstructing or impeding law enforcement during civil disorder. Hazelton’s attorney Daryl Kipnis — a New Jersey lawyer who unsuccessfully ran for Congress as a pro-Trump Republican in 2018 — said during the hearing that there are no allegations Hazelton had a weapon or intended to “cause any bodily harm.” In arguing for her release, he said Hazelton home-schools her two small children, and also cited the COVID-19 pandemic and “the risk she would have if she was incarcerated.”
Samuel Fisher was allegedly arrested on the Upper East Side Wednesday morning with an arsenal of ammunition, two machetes, and an American flag. A New York City pickup artist accused of bringing firearms to Washington, D.C., and participating in the “violent” Capitol insurrection—then later bragging about it on social media—has been arrested. Samuel Fisher, a 35-year-old who also goes by the name “Brad Holiday,” was arrested Wednesday on several charges, including disorderly conduct on restricted grounds and unlawful entry. According to the New York Daily News, Fisher was taken into custody on the Upper East Side and had with him an arsenal of ammunition, tactical gear, two machetes, an American flag, and at least one shotgun. Prosecutors allege Fisher traveled to D.C with “multiple firearms and a bulletproof vest,” though it is not immediately clear if he carried them inside the Capitol. Fisher also posted several photos and social media messages while at the riots (…) According to a criminal complaint, Fisher began posting about his intent to travel to D.C. for Trump’s rally in December, stating in a Facebook post, “we must stand up to these people and take our world back” and “It’s time to bring the pain upon them.” In another New Years’ Eve post, Fisher revealed he was planning to “exercise my 2A legal rights” during the Jan. 6 rally. In an online essay titled “January 6, 2021, will be the most important day of our lives,” Fisher goes into detail about the need to face off “Communists or Satanists that have blackmailed, bribed, and influenced almost every member of our Government, Media, Educational system, etc.” The essay was written on Fisher’s blog under his online alias “Brad Holiday.” (…) But on his personal website BradHoliday.com, things take a far darker turn: In November 2020, he posted the notorious “Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion,” the infamous forgery used to justify pogroms and genocide against Jewish people. (…) In October 2020, he was still promoting the debunked “Pizzagate” conspiracy theory, which posits that Clinton aide John Podesta ran a child sex trafficking ring out of the basement of Comet Pizza in Washington, D.C. And a post from December began with the sentence “QAnon is legit,” thus aligning himself with the movement that falsely predicted that Trump would round up and arrest supposed Satan-worshipping cannibalistic pedophiles who they believe run much of the United States. As late as Jan. 9, three days after the riots, he wrote a post with the title “[President] Joe Biden (and his family) Are Degenerate Criminal Pedophiles.”
A man with ties to metro Detroit has been arrested and charged for allegedly assaulting a law enforcement officer at the Capitol riot with a hockey stick. In an affidavit, federal agents say that Michael Joseph Foy was identified as the man in a New York Times video seen swinging a hockey stick repeatedly at a Metropolitan police officer on the ground that a mob had pulled out from the arch entryway at the Capitol. The FBI notes that it did not appear the officer was acting aggressively, and the attack did not appear to be justified. Based on analysis of the video, the FBI says Foy’s attack lasted for 16 seconds before he was knocked down by another rioter. According to the affidavit, he entered the Capitol later through a broken window
