When police violence is a dog bite

An Alabama man killed by a K9 officer was one of thousands of Americans bitten by police dogs every year. Few ever get justice. The tiny pink house was pretty much empty. And run-down and dark, since the electricity had been shut off. Nevertheless, someone was trying to burglarize it, a caller told 911 well after midnight on a Sunday in Montgomery, Alabama. The police called in a K-9 handler and his dog, Niko, to search 3809 Cresta Circle. The dog lunged, found a man and bit down, according to court records. It took almost two minutes for the handler to pull the dog off. And before long, their suspect, a 51-year-old Black man, bled to death. The dog had torn an artery in his groin. The man was Joseph Lee Pettaway, and his family says he was no burglar. He got in trouble for bad checks and served time years ago, but was now taking care of his 87-year-old mother, Lizzie Mae, and helping to repair the pink house in her neighborhood, they said; he had a key and permission to sleep there. Joe Songer/AL.com The family is suing the city, seeking damages and information about what happened. “I never thought a dog would end up killing anybody, especially a trained dog,” said Walter Pettaway, Joe’s brother. The family also wants public release of the police bodycam video from July 8, 2018, that is described in court documents. The city is fighting to keep the video from going public, arguing in court that it would cause “annoyance, embarrassment” for officers who were acting in good faith and could end up “facilitating civil unrest.” Officials did not respond to requests for comment. Police dog bites are rarely fatal. But in other ways, the case of Joseph Pettaway is not unusual. These dogs, whose jaws and teeth are strong enough to punch through sheet metal, often produce severe injuries. Police employ them not only in emergencies, but also for low-level, non-violent incidents. The dogs bite thousands of Americans each year, including innocent bystanders, police officers, even their own handlers. And there is little oversight, nationally or in the states, of how police departments use them. These are some of the findings of an investigation by The Marshall Project, with AL.com, IndyStar and the Invisible Institute in Chicago. (…) Police dog bites can be more like shark attacks than nips from a family pet, according to experts and medical researchers. A dog chewed on an Indiana man’s neck for 30 seconds, puncturing his trachea and slicing his carotid artery. A dog ripped off an Arizona man’s face. A police dog in California took off a man’s testicle. Dog bites cause more hospital visits than any other use of force by police, according to a 2008 academic analysis of 30 departments.

Melania Trump will not go down in history as one of the more active First Ladies. Trump’s wife has dutifully rolled out a few policies and stood by her husband’s side during official events (even if she’s done it somewhat frostily). But she’s shown no apparent desire to get really stuck into her role, only moving to the White House in June 2017. And a new leaked recording gives further insight into Melania’s mindset as First Lady – which seems to be ‘Why me?’. Recorded secretly by former adviser and friend Stephanie Winston Wolkoff and reported by CNN, the audio shows Melania talking about having to decorate the White House – and the critique she’s receiving about Trump’s harrowing policy of separating all migrant children from their parents who cross into America from Mexico. And it’s her comments about the latter that have provoked fury from some who’ve heard it. Melania is heard saying: ” I’m working … my a** off on the Christmas stuff, that you know, who gives a f*** about the Christmas stuff and decorations? But I need to do it, right? OK, and then I do it and I say that I’m working on Christmas and planning for the Christmas and they said, ‘Oh, what about the children that they were separated?’ Give me a f break. Where they were saying anything when Obama did that? I can not go, I was trying get the kid reunited with the mom. I didn’t have a chance — needs to go through the process and through the law. Obama’s policy saw children separated from parents when “authorities had concerns for their well-being” or couldn’t confirm the adult was legally allowed to care for the child.” Under Trump, children were automatically separated from parents, full stop. Another recording saw Melania praise detention centres.

Beamte der ägyptischen Polizei und der Nationalen Sicherheitsbehörde verhaften willkürlich Lesben, Schwule, Bisexuelle und trans Personen und halten sie unter unmenschlichen Bedingungen fest, setzen sie systematisch Misshandlungen einschließlich Folter aus und regen häufig Mithäftlinge an, sie zu schikanieren, kritisiert Human Rights Watch. In einem neuen Bericht fasst die internationale Menschenrechtsorganisation Entwicklungen seit 2017 zusammen und dokumentiert sie mit Aussagen von Opfern der Verfolgung. Damals hatten die Behörden ihr Vorgehen gegen LGBT verschärft, nachdem Personen bei einem Konzert der Band Mashrou’ Leila in Kairo Regenbogenflaggen geschwenkt hatten (queer.de berichtete). In diesem Juni hatte sich die ägyptische LGBTI-Aktivistin Sarah Hegazi im Asyl in Kanada das Leben genommen (queer.de berichtete). Sie hatte eine der Flaggen geschwenkt, war von den Behörden für drei Monate in Haft genommen worden und berichtete von psychologischer Folter und solcher mit Elektroschocks. “Die ägyptischen Behörden scheinen um die schlechteste Bilanz bei Rechtsverletzungen gegen LGBT-Menschen in der Region zu konkurrieren, während das internationale Schweigen entsetzlich ist”, kommentierte Rasha Younes, LGBT-Expertin von HRW am Donnerstag. “Sarah Hegazys tragischer Tod mag weltweit Wellen des Schocks und der Solidarität ausgelöst haben, aber Ägypten hat weiterhin unverfroren LGBT-Menschen verfolgt und misshandelt, einfach weil sie sind, wer sie sind.”

A right-wing #extremist from Germany detained by the #ABW – #terror

The Internal Security Agency – Poland’s special service in charge of counterintelligence and counterterrorism – has detained a German national suspected of participating in an organized crime group implicated in terrorist activities. The group has operated on the territory of Poland and other countries. The man was detained last week, after the officers of the ABW had found he could have possessed firearms and explosives. Jurgen K. (name withheld under Polish privacy laws) would also spread radical, anti-systemic views – mainly via the social media – and endorse extreme right-wing organizations. While searching the man’s workplace and the place he resided, the officers found explosives – 1.2 kilograms of TNT, both liquid and pressed – as well as ammunition, a detonator, a tear gas grenade and electronic storage devices.

Ein Nachruf: Christian Keck, „Blood & Honour“ und die Nürnberger Nordkurve

Am 12. September 2020 starb der Neonazi Christian Keck an einem Herzinfarkt im Kreise seiner Kameraden. Zu seiner Aufbahrung am 16. September 2020 in Erlangen reisten prominente Nazikader aus dem gesamten Bundesgebiet an. Einen Tag später beteiligten sich ebenfalls Fans des 1. FC Nürnberg u.a. der Gruppen „Ultras Nürnberg 1994“ und der „Red Devils“ an seinem Gedenken. (..) Christian „Kecki“ Keck (geboren am 13.03.1978) war seit mindestens Mitte der Neunzigerjahre in der Neonaziszene aktiv. Er trat vor allem in Zusammenhang mit „Blood & Honour“- Strukturen in Erscheinung. Seit den Nullerjahren war er Sektionschef von „Blood & Honour“ in Franken1. In dieser Funktion organisierte er rechte Konzerte und Veranstaltungen, auf welchen sich die deutsche und europäische Neonazi-Szene vernetzte und auch Geld für ihre abgetauchten Kamerad*innen im Untergrund gesammelt wurde. Er war ebenfalls Teil von „Combat 18“ („Kampfgruppe Adolf Hitler“), dem bewaffneten, terroristischen Arm von „Blood & Honour“. Bereits sein Vorgänger an der Spitze der fränkischen „Blood & Honour“ Sektion Bernd P., Spitzname „Pernod“, galt mit seiner Band „Hate Society“ als Schlüsselfigur von „Combat 18“ in Deutschland2. „Combat 18“ finanziert sich vorwiegend aus dem rechtsextremen Musikgeschäft und gilt als Nutznießer zahlreicher Neonazi-Konzerte aus dem Netzwerk von „Blood & Honour“. Dieser exponierten Position von „Combat18“-Strukturen über „Blood & Honour“, ging ein Grabenkampf zwischen eher an Musik und Business orientierten Neonazis und militanten, terroristischen „Combat 18“ Mitgliedern voraus3. Seit dem Verbot von „Blood & Honour“ im Jahr 2000 war Christian Keck in der Nachfolgestruktur „Division 28“ aktiv. Ab 2003 begannen sich Neonazis aus dem „Blood & Honour“-Nachfolge-Label „Division 28“ an dem alten Konflikt „Geschäfte oder Untergrund?“ zu zerstreiten. Es entstanden zwei entsprechende Flügel anhand der Trennungslinie „Real-B&H“ oder „Combat 18“. Die Vertreter des „Combat 18“-Flügels waren Mitglieder aus Nürnberg und Thüringen.
In seiner fränkischen Heimat war Christian Keck ebenfalls bestens mit Neonazis der „Hammerskins“ , des „Freien Netz Süd“ bzw. deren Nachfolgeorganisation „der III.Weg“ sowie Neonazis aus dem Raum Schwabach (ehemaliger Nazitreffpunkt „Club Nr. 18“) vernetzt. Nachdem er im Februar 2013 seine Aktivitäten reduzierte, weil er beinahe durch eine geplatzte Halsschlagader zu Tode gekommen war, organisierte Christian Keck in den letzten Jahren vor seinem Tod wieder Neonaziveranstaltungen in Bayern und Thüringen. Des Weiteren taucht Christian Keck in Akten des NSU-Untersuchungsausschusses und in den Vernehmungsprotokollen des NSU-Prozesses auf. Die Recherchen haben ergeben, dass Christian Keck zumindest Uwe Mundlos persönlich gekannt hat.

N. Macedonia: 2 policemen suspended over Roma man’s beating

North Macedonia’s interior minister said two police officers were suspended Friday over the beating of a Roma man, a form of brutality that rights groups said is a disturbingly frequent occurrence. Interior Minister Oliver Spasovski said one of the officers was also charged with unjustified use of force. His colleague was suspended for allegedly doing nothing to stop the beating of the man, who was involved in a car accident in the southern town of Bitola. The action came after the country’s Avaja non-governmental organization posted a video on social media allegedly showing a policeman brutally beating and kicking the Roma man on Saturday. “The Interior Ministry strongly condemns any case of violence, especially when it is committed by a police officer,” Spasovski said. “No such act can be justified.” The Avaja NGO said another three Roma men reported that they also were recently beaten by police in Bitola. The organization is planning a Saturday protest against police brutality targeting the Roma, who comprise about 2.7% of North Macedonia’s 2.1 million people.

Nach Tagesspiegel- und Zeit-Online-Recherchen wurden seit 1990 mindestens 187 Menschen von extrem Rechten getötet. Die interaktive Karte stellt die Fälle dar. Rechtsmotivierte Gewalttäter haben zwischen 1990 und 2020 in Deutschland mindestens 187 Menschen getötet. Doch in den offiziellen Statistiken der Sicherheitsbehörden tauchen nur 109 von ihnen auf. Diese Dokumentation aller Namen und Fälle soll den Opfern ein Gesicht geben und zeigen, dass sie nicht Opfer gewöhnlicher Kriminalität wurden. Die Dokumentation entstand seit 2010 in einer gemeinsamen Langzeitrecherche von Tagesspiegel und “Zeit Online”. Sie stützt sich auf das erstmals im Jahr 2000 veröffentlichte Vorgängerprojekt des Tagesspiegels, an dem die “Frankfurter Rundschau” beteiligt war. Aufgenommen wurden nur Fälle, bei denen die politische Motivation der Täter als sicher gelten kann. Seit dem Start des Projekts haben die Sicherheitsbehörden in mehr als 40 Fällen ihre ursprüngliche Bewertung revidiert und Fälle aus dieser Liste nachträglich in die offiziellen Statistiken aufgenommen.
